On 02 June 2010, a woman took notice of a young mother and her approximately 2 months old baby on our beach. The mother was sitting on the baby, and it looked like she was planning to asphyxiate it. |
| Lisa - a newborn comes to Nice View |
On 09 January, I, Gudrun Dürr, am called to the phone by our accountant Jimmy. It is urgent he says. On the line our social worker Cosmas. The Youth Welfare Office got in touch. A baby, approximately 5 days old, needs to be picked up at the police station in Diani. Immediately I pack some baby clothes, and we drive to Diani. |
| Tim (a further baby for Nice-View .....) |
Our Nice View family is growing… On 13 June 2009, we received once again a phone call from the Youth Welfare Office. A newborn cannot stay with his mother and needs to be picked up. |
| Michelle (a new baby for Nice View) |
Mr Gitau from the Youth Welfare Office was very hesitant to call us, since he knew at the time that we had no space. However, since he knows we take care of babies very well, he had decided to give it a try. We received once again a phone call on 21 January 2009. A baby, a small girl, was born in the hospital on 11 January 2009. The mother, who provided a wrong name, left the hospital shortly after the birth. After waiting for the return of the mother for one week, the hospital informed the Youth Welfare Office. |
| Naomi, an underfed child finds refuge in Nice-View.... |
On 21 November 2009, we were called to come to the hospital in Msambweni. What we found at the hospital was a malnourished 14-month old girl named Naomi. A mother, entirely desperate or confused, sat at the sick bed with her three little children: Neema around 3 years old, Naomi and a three month old baby. |
| Kea |
Kea (1 year) and the twins Mwanamgeni and Maimuna (4 years) joined our Nice View family on 29Jun2009. |
| Sheila |
Hello, I am Sheila! On July 16th 2008, my new Mama (Mama Gudrun) received once again a phone call from the police. This time from Diani. Immediately, she sent my two new uncles (uncle Cosmas and uncle Saidi) to pick me up. Before that I had spent 3 days all alone in the flat and was crying a lot. Then, finally, my neighbour forced open the door and called the police. I have been held at the police station 3 times already. Each time my mother had abandoned me. |
| Caroline |
In July 2007, a local acquaintance told me about a mentally unstable woman in an advanced state of pregnancy spending everyday in a shopping centre near the tourist centre Diani Beach. My acquaintance asked me for advice, how this woman could be helped. We decided to observe her and to talk her into giving birth to her baby in a hospital. This wasn't easy but most of the shop owners in the shopping centre were prepared to help the young woman. Little Caroline was born on July 10, 2007 and was well cared for by all the helpers. |

On Friday, 05 December 2008, I (Gudrun Dürr) accompanied the sick Mwanasha to our general practitioner Dr. Mashanga. In the clinic I received a phone call from the Youth Welfare Office with the request if we could accommodate additional children. They approached us, since recently two difficult cases were assigned to another home in Ukunda. |

| Daniel |
Our little Daniel, only two 2 weeks old, came down with Malaria and was fighting for his life for almost 3 days and nights. We had been taking care of him around the clock and had given him food in short sips. Since he was very weak already - probably a product of being born too early - his little body could hardly cope with the drugs. He lost weight, since he was refusing food. But from the 4th day on he was accepting food again and his condition improved. Now he is completely healthy and requests his vial every two hours. |
| Stacey |
On 29 January 2007, we admitted Stacey: Three days after Steven came to us, there was another appeal for help of the Youth Welfare Office. A young and single mother brought her little daughter Stacey (11 months old) to a neighbour stating that she could not take care of the little one anymore. The surprised neighbor was perplexed and informed the police. On the same evening, Stacey's mother was picked up by the police in a disco and was arrested. |

On Friday, 26.01.07, Gudrun was informed by the Youth Welfare Office in Kwale that a little baby has been found next to a waterhole in the bush near the Tanzanian border, and that has been brought to the hospital in Msambweni. Immediately after she had received the message, Gudrun went to the hospital to meet the baby boy - approximately one year old - with big and sad eyes, and she got the idea that he is suffering from pain. The woman who has found him was with him. |
| Sherine |
Begin of April 2006, Samuel, his little sister Sherine and his mother were found in the bush, almost starved, and brought to the hospital. After taking care of the children in the hospital for two weeks, Samuel and Sherine came to us. |
| Maimuna (Mona) |

Maimuna (4 years), her twin sister Mwanamgeni and her little brother Kea (1 year) joined our Nice View family on 29Jun2009. |

| Alpha Daniella |
During a meeting in July 2008, Cosmas, a social worker at Nice View, told me about his daughter Alpha Daniella because he needed some advice. Due to changes with his wife's family situation, (they were divorced) it had become necessary for him to take care of his three-year-old daughter, who had lived with her mother until then. As a single father he had to make this new situation work. |
| Joshua |
On Monday, 05 July 2005, we received a call from the Youth Welfare Office with the information that a baby was abandoned in Ukunda. It was brought to the hospital by the police on Sunday, and Gudrun went to look for the baby at the hospital on Tuesday. She was deeply shocked. The baby was lying alone in a (cold) incubator with the same napkins it had been wearing since Sunday. Because the hospital was understaffed, very few nurses were caring for it. |
| Neema |
May 2005: Karibu Neema! Karibu means welcome and we dearly welcome little Neema in our Nice View family. Neema was found abandoned approximately 5 days old. The baby was initially brought to the hospital for examination and care. |
| Jolene |
A little girl, reduced to a skeleton and approximately 3 weeks old, was found in a bush, nearby Diani-Beach (South Coast). In fact her chances to survive were little, since she weighed two kilograms only and had problems in breathing. But she was lucky, a Youth Welfare Officer brought her to us in Nice View and we immediately took her to the hospital for examination. She received drugs and nutritious food. Now, after 1 week of intensive care, we can see her improving significantly. We are confidence and hope she will survive. Since she came nameless to us, we call her now Jolene. |
| Moses |
Moses was freed out of his ´prison´ in a dramatic rescue operation. He was alone in a dark and completely empty room in Mombasa. This tragic event was even broadcasted on the Kenyan news. The mother had frequently locked the approximately 5 year old boy in that room for hours, as neighbours told. Then came the day when the mother did not return. The little one was all alone lying on the rough ground without any food. |
| Nicolas-Antony |
In the afternoon of September 27, 2008 we received an urgent call from the hospital in Msambweni. I (Gudrun Dürr) was asked to have a look at a four-year-old boy in the children's medical unit as soon as possible. Such a request is always linked to the question whether the respective child would find a place to live at Nice View. At once, Paulah, a staff member in the kindergarten, and I went to the hospital and after completing several formalities we were led to Nicolas' bed. |
| Mary Kamau |
In April 2008, the village elder of Ukunda found Mary alone on the road in Diani Beach/Ukunda. He took the child to the police in Ukunda. The officers suggested that, for the time being, he take care of little Mary and take responsibility. The village elder agreed and took Mary in. In August, a woman from Mombasa suddenly appeared at the village elder´s home and claimed to be Mary's mother. She didn't have any documents to prove this claim. Since the village elder was afraid that the little girl would be kidnapped, he contacted the police. |
| Samuel |
Begin of April 2006, Samuel, his little sister Sherine and his mother were found in the bush, almost starved, and brought to the hospital. After taking care of the children in the hospital for two weeks, Samuel and Sherine came to us. After on week, Sherine's suffering was over, and since also his mother passed away End of May, Samuel is now the only survivor of this little family. According to the physicians and his dental status, Samuel is 3, and perhaps even 5 years old. Astonishingly, he is smaller than Joshua who turns one in June. |
| Fredrick Musyoki |
As told by Francis: Four brothers had to accept constant changes of location, due to the fathers work. Francis, the oldest, had suffered most, since he had to always change school. In June 2006, he left school in the 5th class. Martin, who is now 7 years old, never went to school. Ndolo is already 5 years old and has never attended kindergarten. |
| Shani |
Shani came to us on Thursday, 5th of August 2004, and has somewhat settled down in the meantime. He becomes 6 months on 18 August 2004 and needs a lot of attention and love. He is a friendly baby and smiles when you carry him. He definitely did not experience a lot of love and warmth, since his family has a lot of problems. His mother is approximately 16 years old and was raped. The rapist was put in prison, but this did not really help the family. The misery was too big. The father of his mother has eight children and her mother had run away. |

End of March 2004, ‘Beth’ (Betty), approximately 6 month old, came to us. Her sixteen year old mother was against her will to get married with an elderly man. Since in |
| Sarah |
A young mother abandoned her approximately 3 months old baby in the bush, condemned to death. But the little one was lucky. A women passing by discovered her and brought her to the Youth Welfare Office. The Youth Welfare Office asked us to accommodate her and we agreed. Some days later, on 28 October 2003, the court signed the guardianship over to us. Since the name of the little one was unknown, we called her “Sarah”. All of our children and employees admitted her warmly in the “Nice View” family. Another last minute rescue... |
| Noah-Amaton |
A young woman handed over her baby to a secretary in an office in Kwale, with the request to take care of him for a few minutes, since she wanted to go to the bathroom. She did not come back, after waiting for a long time and looking for the mother, and the secretary brought the small boy, approximately 7 months old to the Youth Welfare Office. From there, he was brought to a nearby children's home that wasn’t able to take care of a baby. So, the baby was somehow kept alive, but became very sick. |
| Juma |
It is difficult to say 'No' when children are in need. Therefore, we decided to accommodate four more children on November 26th, 2008. We wanted to avoid the situation of their getting separated and spread over different children's homes. Since it is now getting quite crowded in the children's house, we pushed on with the furnishing of the girl's house, and hope that the first girls can move in January. |

Fredrick called "Freddy" is now 2 and 1/2 years old and is actually happy if he gets enough food. The father left the family in June 2006, for reasons unknown to us. |
| Leah |
Leah came to us in August 2001. At that time she was just 3 months old. Her mother was 13 years old and still a child herself. Her grandparents are very poor and do not even have accommodation. Leah almost died of hunger. But she was lucky: the youth welfare office was informed. Leah’s mother came to a boarding school for girls and she came to Nice View. Meanwhile Leah is not undernourished anymore and is the sweetie-pie of Nice View. |
| Alina |
On 12 March 2003, the youth welfare office brought Alina (about 7 months old) to the "Nice View Children's Village". She was abandoned by her mother but luckily found by people passing by who brought her to the youth welfare office. She was immediately examined by a physician, also an AIDS test was performed, which was unfortunately positive. We were deeply touched, she was the first HIV positive child in "Nice View Children's Village'. |
| Dorothy Shally (TRIX) |
On Friday, 13 February 2009, two siblings, who are situated in an extreme emergency according to the Youth Welfare Office, were adopted. The girl, Trix is 9 years old, her brother Boni 11. To date we do not know the exact story of the siblings, there are a number of contradicting stories, and Gudrun and our social worker Cosmas are currently investigating the case. The traces even lead to Western Kenya. Just one is for sure: it is a long and very sad story. However, the siblings are save now and have found a new home in Nice View. |
| Anna |
Anna has been with us since November 2001. Her single mother died in a car accident and she later came to live with her grandmother, who got then very ill. We decided to accommodate her. She had a hard time and was very fearful at first, cried a lot and did not speak a word. But she settled down very fast in Nice View. Meanwhile she talks a lot, sings, dances and plays with the other children. Anna feels now at home in Nice View and pleases us. We got fond of her and she has now a special place in our hearts. She has attended the private kindergarten since February 2002. |
| Michael, a street kid takes refuge in Nice-View .... |
On 23 February 2009, we were with Boni & Trixi for a conversation at the Youth Welfare Office, meanwhile the manager of another children's home joined. She brought a boy back because the management of the home had decided not to accommodate the boy. Before that he was at that home for 3 days already. |

| Lavenda Achieng |
Lavenda was made an orphan at age 2. After the death of her parents (the father died in 1999 - the mother one year later), the brother of her mother accommodated her. There she was tolerated only and not loved. The aunt and two older cousins hassled and abused her for years. She was brutally beaten by her aunt - a big scar in her face testifies to the brutality at home aggressions (even with a knife). After she came to school more often with a swollen face, bruises and wounds, the teachers realized the abuse and informed the Youth Welfare Office in Mombasa. |

On 06 July 2008, a Sunday morning, Gudrun received a phone call from the police station in our village Msambweni. A small boy had been brought there by a villager. The villager saw the boy all alone on the main road (between Msambweni & Lunga Lunga) and asked him why he was alone that late at night. The boy told him that he was looking for his aunt who lived in Msambweni. He walked alone all the way from the border of Tanzania to Msambweni (approximately 65 km) and had eaten only mangoes. |
| Kahindi |
Kahindi now looks very happy. This was not always the case. In the streets of Kwale, he possibly would face a very different life with his mentally handicapped mother. But he almost has forgotten his bad experiences with people who were not really interested in him. In May 2000, he came to Nice View and gets everything he needs: a loving care, healthy food, education, hope, enjoyment and a perspective for his future. |

| Salim |
Salim was amongst the first 8 children we accommodated in 2000. He was classified by the Youth Welfare Office as an orphan. However, since he kept constantly asking for his mother we started with investigations. After finding his mother, Salim was transferred back to his family. |
| Saumu |
Saumu lived, after her parents died, with her aunt. After living in an impoverished life Saumu came to us with physiological disorders. She was very reserved never laughed. Her physical condition was also not well. On 13 March 2000, she came to us to Nice View. Now, Saumu is a friendly girl without problems and fears. She laughs a lot and plays with her friends. We are pleased that she is now so happy and carefree. Since January 2002 Saumu attends to a private school. She loves our babies very much and often plays in her spare time with them. |
| Haji |
On 13 March 2000, Haji came together with his two older siblings Suleiman and Mwanasha to Nice View. In the beginning he had horrible nightmares. Now he sleeps through the night. He was underfed and his body was very weak for his age. At Nice View he gets healthy and nutritious food. Because of that, his health has improved dramatically. He is a very kind boy and always plays practical jokes. His special characteristic is absolute honesty you can rely on. |
| Fatuma |
Fatuma and Mwanahalima lived with their very poor grandmother after the death of their mother (they never knew the father). Since she could not take care of two children, the children got separated and Fatuma came to an aunt. Both had no possibility to go to school. Fatuma is a quiet and a kind child. She has made many friends at Nice View with whom she plays, sings, dances and laughs. Since January 2002, she goes to a private school and has improved her grades. |
| Mwanasha small |
Mwanasha lived after the death of her parents with her grandmother under very poor conditions. She could not go to school, since nobody could pay the fees. When she came to Nice View, she was very intimidated and without vitality, but after a short while she was again in love with life. Now she is a very kind and musical girl. With her friends she has entertained us many evenings with singing and dancing. Since January 2002 she goes to a private school and has improved her marks. She is very diligently at school. |
| Francis Mwendo Kelvin Kalulu |

As told by Francis: Four brothers had to accept constant changes of location, due to the fathers work. Francis, the oldest, had suffered most, since he had to always change school. In June 2006, he left school in the 5th class. Martin, who is now 7 years old, never went to school. Ndolo is already 5 years old and has never attended kindergarten. Fredrick called "Freddy" is now 2 and 1/2 years old and is actually happy if he gets enough food. The father left the family in June 2006, for reasons unknown to us. |
| Amina |
Amina lived with her grandmother after her father died. Her mother is in a clinic for mentally disabled people. She never went to school, since her grandmother and her family are very poor and nobody could come up with the required school fees. When Amina came to Nice View, she was very scared and socially inhibited. Now she is a very balanced child and is always cheerful. She feels at home in Nice View. Amina goes since 2001 to a private school. In her spare time she likes to play “Mensch ärgere Dich nicht” or other games and to tingle. |
| Mwanasha big |
Mwanasha came with her two siblings Haji and Suleiman on 13 March 2000 to Nice View. After the death of their parents they lived with their sick and weak grandmother. They had not even a real roof above their heads and not each day they got something to eat. Since their grandmother was very weak, they had to take care of themselves. They did not go to school but had to work in the garden and had to carry heavy water buckets to their home. Mwanasha and her brother Suleiman go since 2001 to a private school, Haji since January 2002. Mwanasha is very diligently in school and has good grades. |
| Mwanahalima |
Mwanahalima and Fatuma lived with their very poor grandmother after the death of their mother (they never knew the father). Since she could not take care of two children, the children got separated and Fatuma came to an aunt. Both had no possibility to go to school. Mwanahalima goes now since 2001 to a private school. She has some difficulties to learn but we give her extra lessons to improve her grades. She likes to assist in baking cakes and takes lovingly care of the little ones. |
| Suleiman |
Suleiman, Mwanasha and Haji lived after the death of their parents with their sick grandmother. They lived under very poor circumstances and had not even a roof above their heads. Suleiman, who has never visited a school, goes since January 2001 to a private school. He has a sponsor, who knows him personally and finances his schooling. Suleiman has very good marks and his goal is to become the best in his class. In his free time, he goes fishing or helps our carpenter, as he likes to work with wood. |
