On Friday (February 16, 2018) we received news from Kenya of a building on the clinic property being on fire. It is used as a storage (for medical supplies, equipment) but also the water supply (well, water pump etc.) is also located there.
The roof was set on fire by sparks in strong winds. The gardener had tried to put out the fire but collapsed due to lack of oxygen. Luckily, staff members had come to help and rescued him and he could be cared for at the clinic.
The firefighters in Diani (wearing the uniforms of the Neu-Ulm firefighters) had been called by Denise and were at the scene in 25 minutes. However, this was too late to save much. Whatever had not been destroyed by the fire was damaged by the firefighting operations.
The financial damage is estimated at around 30.000€. Luckily, Association Black-White was able to provide funds for the provisional restoration of the water supply. However, those funds are provisions for getting through the summer months that bring only small donations. In any case, this amount isn’t much more than a drop in the ocean. In order to be able to relaunch this building in the near future we hope for your support!
